Katy Perry claims Brand reacted after paparazzo tried to take a photograph up her dress
Russell Brand was arrested for battery at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) after allegedly attacking a photographer.
The British funnyman was traveling with fiance Katy Perry when he became irate with a photographer and struck him on Friday afternoon.
Perry, 25, has since claimed on her Twitter page that Brand leapt to her defence when a paparazzo tied to take pictures up her dress.
'Give me a break': Seen here minutes before the fracas with fiancee Katy Perry, who has since claimed Russell reacted when a photographer tried to take a picture up her dress
Arrival: Katy and Russell on an escalator into the airport. The alleged incident is said to have occurred when a photographer tried to take a picture up her skirt
She wrote: 'If you cross the line & try an put a lens up my dress, my fiancé will do his job & protect me. #standbyyourman #don't f*** with the Brands.'
Both Brand and Perry missed their scheduled flights to Las Vegas.
According to U.S. reports, another photographer made a citizens arrest on the 35-year-old before airport police stepped in.
The star, who was wearing a T-shirt with the slogan, 'God, come on, give me a break', was handcuffed and taken into custody, but was later released on £13,000 bail. he is due in court on October 15.
Out of my way: Brand gives the photographer a shove
If Brand is convicted, he could face up to six months in jail and a conviction could cause his US work visa to be revoked.
When Katy and Brand marry, he will be eligible to apply for US citizenship as the spouse of an American, but this could be put into jeopardy if he is convicted of a felony offence.
Los Angeles Airport Police spokesman Belinda Nettles said yesterday: 'About 1:50 pm today, Los Angeles Airport Police responded to Terminal 5 to a report of a battery involving a celebrity and a commercial photographer.
Grim-faced: Russell is taken away to be booked at LAPD's Pacific Station after being arrested for battery
Aborted journey: The couple are pictured here together on an escalator looking a little down in the dumps before the alleged skirmish with photographers
'The victim involved placed the suspect Russell Brand under private person's arrest.
'Airport Police took the suspect into custody for Penal Code Section 242 - battery.
'He will be booked at the LAPD Pacific Division station.'
After the arrest police were seen taking their own pictures of the alleged victim, who appeared to have a bruise on the left side of his face.
Ouch: The photographer involved in the incident holds what appears to be an ice pack to his face following the alleged attack
Alleged victim: The paparazzo spoke to airport police and gave a statement
Support: The tweet Katy Perry made on her Twitter page after the incident
